Jenius, 6 Minggu Bisa program, the teaching of English
In the era of
globalization, English obviously has a prominent role as an international
communication language. It requires people to master English. Mastering English
involves mainly developing the basic competence of English that is listening,
speaking, reading and writing Realizing the importance of English, the
government of Indonesia establishes English as a compulsory subject to be
taught at schools in Indonesia. Since it was first taught, there have been
problems in the teaching of English as a foreign language. Students face
difficulties in learning English.
One of the ways that
language learners can do to overcome this issue is by taking informal courses
of English. One of the English courses in Malang is Sang Bintang School. It has
many kinds of program which include “6 Minggu Bisa”. It is a program for anyone
whose age is 15 years or above. “6 Minggu Bisa” aims at developing the
students’ mastery of the basic skills of speaking, listening, reading, writing,
16 tenses, and 1000 vocabulary in six weeks. It applies a method called
“Kampoenk Jenius”. It is a combination of some teaching methods which are
expected to make students enjoy the learning process. This research aimed to
investigate the meaning of Kampoenk Jenius method, the objective and syllabus
of 6 Minggu Bisa Bahasa Inggris program, kind of teaching and learning
activities employed, materials used in the teaching process, and evaluation
administration.
This research used a
descriptive qualitative design. The researcher used a natural setting: one
class with two instructors in Sang Bintang School Malang as the source of data
and the researcher herself as the key instrument. The data collected is in the
form of field notes and interview transcripts.
Generally, the results of
this research shows that the teaching and learning activities ran well as
indicated by the observations. This research finds out some points of teaching
and learning activities of 6 Minggu Bisa such as Kampoenk Jenius is just a name
of method without applying any new techniques in the teaching of Englishs, the
objectives of the 6 Minggu Bisa program are students are expected to master the
basic skills of speaking, listening, reading, writing, 16 tenses, and 1000
vocabulary. There was a lesson objective of this program but it was not written
and explained detail for each skill. The materials and learning activities
carried out involves questions and answers, pictures slides shows, songs,
games, group discussion, and journal writing. To reinforce the understanding of
the materials, the students also write what they have learned on their “My Self
Book”. There are two kinds of test administered in 6 Minggu Bisa program that
is formative test and summative test.
Finally, it is strongly
suggested that the instructors should have clear objectives and use lesson
plans as a guide in teaching and learning process, develop vocabulary content
which cater the students’ needs, use more various activities and materials in
the teaching and learning processes, create learning activities that are
coherent, and involve repetition of vocabulary input and maximum practice of
using the vocabulary in context.
